It can be easy to completely forget about outdoor lighting when you have the entire inside of your house to worry about, but, it is just as important to consider.  Many might say that they don’t want to waste time, money and energy planning and coming up with outdoor lighting ideas, but it’s really pretty simple.

There are a multitude of reasons that you might want to start thinking of outdoor lighting ideas, and style is just one of them.  Security, safety and a sense of completeness to the home are all equally important reasons to put some effort into this.  Think about it: you’ve got a great home, why spoil it by improperly lighting your front and back yards?  Think of the ambiance you can create with a well-lit outdoor area.  It’s been shown that properly lit spaces can actually affect your happiness, so it’s definitely an important thing to consider.

There are a lot of different places to light outdoors, and as a result there are a lot of different outdoor lighting ideas that come into play when considering an entire yard.  Flower gardens, foliage, driveways, sidewalks, pools and patios are all different things that you should be working on a lighting solution for.  It might sound overwhelming, but it’s actually quite simple.  I’ll break it down for you.

You should make yourself familiar with some of the most common lighting techniques that the professionals use in their projects.  This way you’ll be able to use them for your own house and save the hassle and expense of hiring a pro!  Here are just some of the many different techniques that can be used:

Spotlighting

This is one of the most common outdoor lighting techniques and probably one that you immediately recognize.  You simply use a light to highlight one of the most important areas of your space, whether it be a nice garden, architectural feature or simply the front yard as a whole for security. Try to make sure your placement isn’t too intrusive to the eye.

Shadowing

Most people aren’t familiar with this outdoor lighting idea, but it’s extremely effective.  All you have to do to shadow light is basically mimic the spotlight effect, but actually target your beam of light at the object, so it casts a cool shadow.  Think of those scary movies where the monster is coming around the corner and all you can see is his shadow – that’s a perfect example of a shadowing effect.

Moonlighting

This is a really cool lighting effect.  I actually use this in most of my projects and have found it to be really aesthetically pleasing.  You just place a light over any kind of shrub or foliage and it casts its light downwards, mimicking the moon.  Give this one a try, I guarantee you’ll love it.

Silhouetting

The silhouette light effect actually is the final culmination in creative outdoor lighting ideas.  We’ve done shadows, moonlights and spotlights – what’s left?  Well, backlight the object!  This creates a really interesting situation where you can’t see much detail in the object itself.  Instead, it creates a silhouette and a very unique outline effect.

Of course, there are more techniques besides these four, but these are the most popular and easiest to get started with.  You can also look into grazing, path lighting, wall wash lighting and other types of object specific lighting if you really want to get crazy.

Lastly, outdoor lights are constantly exposed to harsh climates, so make sure you select some rugged gear that can actually stand up to some wear and tear.
